Interview conducted with the journalist, Linda Greene, 25 June The Hollywood ReporterElliot Page was highly impressed by how “The Umbrella Academy”, the third season, handled his transition. He also appreciated how the show placed their character’s transition within the context of the bigger story.
Page became trans in December 2020 between the premiere of the second season and filming the third. The Umbrella Academy’s creators incorporated Page’s transition into the show, and they shared the news on March 29.
Page wrote: “Meet Viktor Hargreeves.” Instagram With a still from “The Umbrella Academy”, Viktor and Allison Hargreeves, (Emmy Raver–Lampman), at the diner bar. Later, Netflix confirmed that. The A.V. Club In season three, Viktor would be transgender.
Page only had positive words to say about their character’s story on the show. It was launched on Netflix on June 22. He said, “I think the most important thing about this show is how it’s handled.” It’s not without its emotional moments, as well.
Page felt that it was powerful to see their transformation on the screen, while he was experiencing it in person was an amazing experience. “The scene in which Luther and Diego come down the stairs. Luther’s awkwardness, all of these things. . . “I’m simultaneously experiencing all of that because I’ve stepped into a moment where I am transgender and perceived that way. I’m having all these new experiences that I didn’t have previously,” Page stated. “These scenes were very resonating with this, which was really amazing.”
They also shared how supportive the cast and crew made him feel. They said, “We were filming right after I revealed that I was transgender, in total isolation.” “It was definitely overwhelming, but it was so rewarding that I was going into work and being surrounded by so many supportive people.”
Seth Meyers was informed by Page on June 21st that Page’s life has changed significantly since his transition. “I feel a way I never thought possible for a long time,” Page said to Seth Meyers.[Transitioning has] My life has been much better. I wish people with similar issues could hear my story and accept it.
Thomas Page McBee, writer, opened up to Esquire About how he and Steve Blackman (The Umbrella Academy) incorporated this plotline into season three. McBee said that Blackman was passionate about Page’s transition, but they announced they would begin production within two weeks. The scripts had already been locked in. They had to work under severe deadlines.
McBee stated, “Because Elliot returned to the screen in a established role and had a fully fleshed out character arc, his story required his transness exist only as a texture, and not as a defining characteristic trait.” Another problem was that season three begins immediately after season 2. “His transformation would have to occur within the first episodes and without the usual handholding for cisgender viewers.”
This led to a deeper story. McBee explained that transgender people are a context. “This story will bring out the best in you and your family.
Blackman felt that portraying Viktor’s transformation well, but not making it the central feature of his story or show was crucial. He said that he liked that the transition didn’t become the main storyline. “With these wonderful people that you’re speaking to, we were capable of crafting something that felt very balanced, real, authentic,” he stated in the June 25 interview. “We intend to keep doing that going forward.”
The third season is “The Umbrella Academy”. The Hargreeves explore an alternate universe with the Sparrows, and deal with personal struggles as well as fighting a cosmically destructive entity.
